Absorption, excretion and bioavailability of copper concentrations are closely regulated. Remember the 1 part copper to every 7 parts of zinc ratio? Every one part of copper requires that 7 parts of zinc are present. When not enough zinc is present, and even though the body needs more copper for its daily activities, any ratio "excess" of copper is rejected and moved out of the body. The liver is the primarily regulator of copper status in the body, controlling copper distribution to body tissues and serous fluids and the excretion of excess copper into the bile.

There are many key copper proteins made by the body, like Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD1) (think--body produced antioxidants!) and tyrosinase (think--skin and hair protection and color). All require the presence of copper. No other metal can functionally substitute for copper in these and other life supporting copper proteins.
