What is spirulina and why does processing affect it so much?

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that has been consumed as a food source for generations. Its nutritional profile includes proteins, pigments, vitamins, minerals, and other naturally occurring compounds. Some of these compounds can be sensitive to heat, light, oxygen, and moisture, which is why processing and storage conditions can influence the quality of the finished product.

Is spirulina powder better than spirulina capsules?

Neither form is universally superior. Powder integrates easily into smoothies or water and offers flexibility; capsules provide consistent daily convenience. What matters most is the quality of the spirulina itself, particularly how it was cultivated and processed.

How do I start taking a spirulina supplement?

Start with a smaller amount and increase gradually over the first week or two. Most people add it to a smoothie or glass of water, which allows the body to adjust before committing to a full daily serving.

Why does the cultivation environment affect spirulina quality so significantly?

Spirulina is cultivated in water and can be influenced by the conditions in which it grows. Open or poorly monitored cultivation environments may increase the risk of exposure to unwanted contaminants, including heavy metals. Controlled cultivation, monitored water quality, and appropriate testing can provide greater assurance about the purity of the finished product.

Can anyone take spirulina?

Spirulina is commonly consumed as a food supplement, but individual circumstances can vary. People with specific health conditions, allergies, or those taking medications should speak with our health coach before adding a new supplement to their routine. Our health coaches can also help you explore whether spirulina fits within your broader nutritional goals rather than assuming the same approach is appropriate for everyone.

What does peroxidation protection mean in practice?

Peroxidation occurs when spirulina compounds are exposed to air, light, or moisture after processing, accelerating breakdown before the product reaches you. Products formulated with appropriate antioxidant and emulsifier protection resist this and retain more nutritional value through storage and shipping.
