Zika virus is occurring in many regions of the world. Local transmission of Zika virus was first reported in the Americas in 2015. Currently there is widespread local transmission in many countries of South and Central America, as well as in the Caribbean and Mexico.
In Brazil, there has recently been a significant increase in number of babies born with microcephaly (abnormally small head). The Ministry of Health of Brazil recently identified a possible relationship between Zika virus infection and the increase in the number of microcephaly cases. An investigation to better understand the possible relationship between Zika virus infection and increased risk for microcephaly is ongoing.
