AFAMend is a proprietary cyanophyta extract that contains a significant concentration of the blue pigment phycocyanin. It is the blue pigment present in blue-green algae that acts in the living cell as a strong natural antioxidant. When isolated, phycocyanin was shown to have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and to reduce or prevent inflammation in various models of inflammation.

Recently, phycocyanin was shown to be one of the most potent and specific natural inhibitors of COX-2 (cyclooxigenase-2), blocking the synthesis of inflammatory eicosanoids.
