The movie Sicko directed by Michael Moore was released on June
29 and is getting a very good reception. People are taking notice.
I think that's absolutely wonderful, and I hope that it will trigger
a countrywide debate about our health care system. The movie is
focusing on the Health Insurance industry, showing it for what it
is. Despite the skillful efforts of their spokespeople they are
not able to hide the fact that they are directly responsible for
many untimely deaths, and lots of emotional and physical suffering.
The movie correctly points out that health insurance coverage should
be universal - we are all equal and should be free from fear of
ruin, are we not? It asks important questions about the nature of
our society. Are we really willing to be cruel and heartless to
our children? Do they all not deserve to be covered?
The American health insurance system developed from executive perks
given out in the post war boom of the 1950s and 1960s. It turned
into an obscene program that allows the pharmaceutical industry
to practically control what doctors are able to do for their patients,
and gave rise to profit making insurance companies, which in itself
is an oxymoron. We don't make profit on our fire departments, police,
and schools, do we? The health insurance industry is making profit
on desperate people who are not in a position to negotiate...

I
am going to see the movie, but I'm wondering if this movie
is working FOR the pharmaceutical companies. People can no
longer afford their prices out of pocket, so tapping into
the tax system ensures their continued parasitic existence
on the American people's health and wallets while ignoring
successful, inexpensive, natural alternatives.

I believe the central issue of this debate is not only THAT people
are insured for health care, but even more importantly WHAT is being
insured. The mainstream food/pharma/medical companies have done
a great job keeping preventive practices and natural healing off
the approved list, making sure only profit making care of the sick
and dying is covered.
The right thing to demand as a result of this nationwide debate
is not insurance for stupid behavior, but incentives to do the smart
things.
Michael is definitely making inroads in his campaign. I am not
sure if he is campaigning for the democrats, or if he is trying
to put forward a balanced view. The sad statistic from Washington
is that there are four (4) lobbyists from the pharmaceutical and
medical industries for each elected senator and congressman.
I strongly urge every one of you to watch these videos, and to
be in touch with your representatives, and I highly recommend that
you insist that ALL health practices be covered. It is my belief
that we all should have a fairly high deductible, perhaps 3% of
our gross personal income, so that the insurance companies get to
deal only with the health catastrophes, not just stubbed toes and
sniffles. The decisions about how we want to spend our health dollars
must be in our hands as consumers. We must separate the delivery
of the service from the coverage for the service.
What do you think?
