Standing on Tacks

One of my inspirations for the way I like to think about medicine is Dr. Sidney Baker. Dr. Baker has been a true pioneer in a new wave of medicine that I feel proud to be a part of in my own small way. His theory of medicine is known informally as the “tack rules of medicine”

The whole idea behind is to consider a person standing or sitting on a tack, where the tack represents an illness or discomfort. If you are the conventional medical practitioner, you are going to propose a pain killer to take away the pain.

The true cure is to stop standing on the tack. Suppose you are standing on two tacks. If you are the practice of common medicine you are thinking: “Well, we can remove one of the tacks, and then you will be 50% healthier.” However, we also know that this does not in fact make you 50% better, since you are still standing on the tack.

The proper approach to treating illness is to focus on strengthening wellness, not diminishing illness or shooting silver bullets at symptoms. It is only through creating a well-maintained balance throughout our entire body, through all systems of the body, that we can realize our full potential as living creatures.
