Product Labels (Pt. 2)

In my previous post, I was talking about the perils of product labels and how they can deceive us as consumers if we are not careful. We do not know if ingredients listed have been grown organically, in what kind of soil, whether pesticides were used or not etc.

This problem is compounded by the fact that some companies have gone to such lengths as to hide ingredients they are using according to trends in the mainstream health media. For example, within the past few years it has become common knowledge that MSG that is used to enhance the flavors of foods is not very nutritious or healthy. Some companies will therefore label their foods as containing “spice” or “hydrolyzed protein” to hide that “bad reputation” ingredient.

The same idea is used in foods which are advertised to us as “ZERO TRANSFAT”, yet as a result they contain twice the number of calories. These problems make it very hard for us as consumers to make informed decisions.
